Should I Use Clip-In or Permanent Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions are a great way to instantly lengthen and thicken your hair and there are both permanent and semi-permanent options available but which one is right for you?

What is the difference?

Permanent hair extensions will be attached to your natural hair and can only be removed by a professional salon. Semi-permanent extensions can be applied and removed yourself.

Hair extension options

  1. Keratin Hair Extensions

Heat is used to melt the keratin bonds, attaching the extensions to your natural hair. Keratin extensions take 3 – 5 hours to apply and will last for up to 8 weeks.

Pros: If applied correctly and good-quality hair is used, Keratin extensions offer a very natural finish and can easily be blended with lowlights and highlights

Con: Since heat needs to be used to apply the extensions, your natural hair can be damaged and the glue can cause scalp irritations too. Since regular salon visits will also be required, this can be one of the more expensive hair extension options.

  1. Tape Hair Extensions

These are some of the most lightweight hair extensions on the market and are attached using two strips of tape, one on each side of your natural hair. EH Hair is a top quality hair salon in Brisbane and can apply tape hair extensions in an hour or less. Tape hair extensions will last up to 8 weeks and can be removed by applying oil and combing it through the hair.

Pro: Tape extensions are very quick and easy to apply and are the most comfortable type of hair extension.

Con: There is always a chance that you may have an allergic reaction to the glue but this is very rare. Tape hair extensions are also not well suited to women with oily hair as it increases the chances of the extensions slipping out.

  1. Microbead Hair Extensions

To attach these hair extensions, small metal loops are clamped to the natural hair, a process that can take up to 3 hours depending on the skill of your stylist. Microbead extensions can last up to 8 weeks and need to be removed by a professional salon.

Pro: Microbead extensions can be seamlessly blended with your lowlights and highlights

Con: Hair extensions will need to be moved up on a regular basis as your hair grows. The friction from compressing the metal loops can also damage your natural hair.

  1. Clip-In Hair Extensions

These strands of hair are attached to a clip, making it easy for you to attach the extensions to your hair yourself. When maintained correctly, clip-in hair extensions can last up to a year.

Pro: Clip-In hair extensions are very easy to attach and it’s not necessary to visit a salon unless you need to trim the extensions to match your haircut. They can also be removed and reattached whenever required.

Con: You won’t be able to sleep with these hair extensions and it’s very easy for the clip to break if you use it on a regular basis. Clip-in hair extensions can also be pulled out quite easily.
